Emergency Procedures


Intruduction


In case of emergency, a well defined routine has to be followed both on board the ship and at the Company ashore.

Every crewmember on board or every member of personnel ashore is expected to be able to deal with every emergency situation in a structured and professional way.

Every company should have a proper Contingency Plan regarding emergency situations that should be regarded as proper guidelines which, in turn, must be used bearing in mind the specific situation one finds himself or herself in.

The Contingency Plan must be kept in a conspicuous place for immediate use.

Every crewmember must always exercise due diligence to guarantee the safety of other crewmembers and passengers, the safety of the ship, the proper delivery of the cargo and the safeguard of the environment.

A well defined contingency plan should at least cover following situations:

especially if they tend to become major disasters.

If one of the above mentioned casualties occur to be of minor nature, the incident can be handled without Contingency Team Activation.

Always be sure you know where the Contingency Team's general headquarters are situated, especially if you sail on a foreign ship.

The master will be assisted by the Contingency Team and assure the coordination between all various parties concerned and the ship.

Although the "Master's Role in Collecting Evidence" mainly deals with claims, there are a great number of points which tell you what to do in case of emergency.

On ships withs foreign crewmembers, make sure everyone is sufficient fluent in English or the current language being spoken on board.
