As a retired Master and Professor at the School of Navigation, Antwerp, I am fully aware of the constant evolution in maritime industry and maritime education.
To face this evolution with confidence, I created a website covering a large number of maritime subjects allowing young people who wish to embrace a career at sea to become acquainted with the maritime profession.
It will also be a valuable reference and help for those already on the job, at sea and ashore.
Please surf through http://maritimeknowhow.comto get an idea of what the site already has to offer. The site is far from being completed.
For a better idea of who we are, click on "About us". For more details about the purpose of the site, click on "Read this".
Maritimeknowhow is an open site, accessible to anyone, free of charge. But, as the creation of such a site is very labour-intensive and very costly, we would be very happy to receive your support. You can give us your support by sponsoring us, by buying one or several of the books we publish AND by inserting a link to maritimeknowhow in your own site. For more details click on "Your support".
During the last months we concentrated all our efforts on the “International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea” (Colregs). We know that this is a very delicate issue which has often been the subject of discussions. On the one hand, due to its complexity, on the other hand because statistics show that it is often not sufficiently known and understood by a large number of watchkeeping officers.
Click on Colregs in the “Table of Contents” to see a large number of Questions and Answers which will allow anyone to test his or her knowledge on this subject. Most of the answers can be found in my book “International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea” which can be purchased on line, simply by clicking on “Books”.
The book is a text book (abt. 450 pages) and it is well illustrated (most of the illustrations are coloured). It has been written mainly for students, who have not yet been confronted with the Colregs, and young Officers of the Watch (OOW) who still need to gain experience in watchkeeping. It also gives a large number of tips to the more experienced OOW.
A large number of presentations and animations (only available on line, under Q & A) make the book more visually comprehensive.
Over a thousand terms have been translated in Dutch, French, Chinese and Japanese which are also available on line. Just click on “Dictionaries”. Very shortly the Spanish language will also be available.
The same endeavour will be made with other subjects such as: Buoyage Systems, Ship Stability, Navigation, Meteorology, etc. Some subjects can already be freely used on line.
Any question, comment, cooperation and/or contribution to the site are welcome on maritmeknowhow@skynet.be
Thanks for your support.
